Made Nice Supper Club

With so many restaurants opening, it’s really difficult to keep track of them all. One place that’s making a bit of a splash is Made Nice Supper Club on Esteban St. in Legaspi Village Makati. I don’t usually go to restaurants in that area as parking is a challenge, but a chance to try this new place with a group of friends was tempting enough for me to take my chances.

Made Nice Supper Club is owned by a group of 5 friends who graduated from Enderun College. From what I observed, two of them work front of the house, while the other 3 are in the kitchen. The place is well lit, with hard concrete, glass tile, and wood surfaces. The lack of any softening material makes the place loud. A friend of mine measured the noise and it came out to close to 90 decibels, which is pretty loud. Despite that, the place was full and it seemed like there was at least one turnover for each table (except ours) when we were there.

The menu is quite compact which I rather like. These guys know what they can do well and stick to it.

I went for the Carrot, to feel virtuous, and to make up for the healthy eating, the Beef. The Carrot makes for a good salad. Not your usual leaves in dressing so it’s something different.

The Beef is your standard beef rib cooked to perfection. Although the 500g includes the bone, it’s still a hefty portion, especially with the bowl of potato puree it comes with. I was barely able to finish it, even though I gave 2 slices away to my co-diners.

I wasn’t able to get a picture of the Octopus starter but trust me, that was great and highly recommended.

As this was a dinner of wine aficionados, we brought a couple of bottles. My contribution was a fully mature Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz 2002. Some tannins evident at first, but they quickly softened in the glass, revealing black cherry and plum fruit. I would say this wine is probably at peak now. This was followed by a rich, powerful oaky, Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz 2007. This needs more time to calm down. Too much oak for me, but it worked well with the meat. The alcohol was noted at a rather high 15% but it didn’t feel out of balance despite that. After the two Australians, we had one from California – Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, which got very high praise from Decanter magazine. Despite its youth, the wine was very good right out of the bottle.

We also had a dessert wine, a lovely honeyed Greywacke Late Harvest Riesling 2011 from New Zealand.

There are only two desserts at Made Nice, but both are excellent. The Banana may not look like much but it’s old school banana cream pie in a bowl.

Banana - Vanilla pudding, biscuits, cream (P 215.00)

A more elaborate dessert is the Milk Chocolate which has several components come together for a decadent experience.

Milk Chocolate - Dense chocolate cake, dulce de leche, malt ice cream (P 250.00)

The only real problem of the place is the noise, which, I understand, will be addressed soon by retrofitting some sound absorbent material under the furniture. Hopefully that reduces the sound to a tolerable level. Another minor quibble is the the bathroom, which has to be accessed by walking a few meters down the street to the building entrance. I can see this will be a problem during the rainy season. Lastly, they only accept cash now, but the card machines should be up and running by mid March. Other than that, everything was near perfect. The food out of the kitchen arrived within 10 minutes of ordering and the staff is very attentive and knowledgeable about the food. I can say Made Nice Supper Club is definitely worth multiple visits.
