Epilogue at S Maison

I rarely venture to the MOA area as I find the traffic unbearable. I do make an annual pilgrimage there because of the Book Fair at SMX which happened recently. This event is now so humungous that it takes an hour lining up just to get inside SMX. Taking advantage of being in the area, we decided to check out S Maison and the dining options there. After a quick look around the mall, we zeroed in on Epilogue which has a Sunday Roast promo for P 599.00++. Not one to pass up a bargain, we decided to try it out.

Epilogue bill itself a Japanese European Fine Bistro. Japanese, because the chefs are Japanese, and European because the the food is decidedly French/Italian with some Japanese touches here and there. The Japanese chefs bring the concept of Kodawari or meticulousness to their craft, and in shows in the dishes they create.

The restaurant itself is quite stunning. The front has a showcase of cakes and pastries with a long bar to the right. The interiors may seem subdued, but look up at the ceiling and it’s a riot of colors in what looks like stained glass. There’s also an open kitchen where you can see all the action taking place.

As it was our first time there, we tried to order from as many parts of the menu as possible. We had some excellent tomato soup, a seafood couscous salad, and a well-executed pizza to start.

For the mains, we could not resist the Sunday Roast and the Beef cheeks with pasta.

The Sunday Roast was a good sized portion. Three thick slices of beef with the usual accompaniments of vegetables, yorkshire pudding, and horseradish. I think 3 people could be quite happy sharing 2 orders of this dish. We could see Chef Hiroyuki Meno in the kitchen supervising all the activity going on and occasionally finishing some dishes himself.

Although we were already quite full after our entrees, we soldiered on and ordered a dessert each. Again, unless you have a real sweet tooth, the desserts are rich enough to be shared by 2 people.

The Kobe had an intriguing wasabi ice cream which, of course, we had to try. You can definitely taste the wasabi but it’s not painful at all. This was done very well.

For showmanship, you can’t beat the Cocoon. Hot chocolate is poured over a large hollow ball of white chocolate. The ball melts and falls apart to reveal the gelato within. Of course I had seen this done before several times, but I’ve never seen the ball fall apart in such even sections.

We were very pleased with our experience in Epilogue. Ambience was great for a quiet meal, with several relatively secluded areas for privacy. Service was attentive and quick, and the food was excellent. Although going there is an ordeal for me, I would gladly do it again to dine at Epilogue.
